Homemade Bone Broth for Beginners

My latest obsession is something that has been around a long time. It’s not a supplement, a special drink, or an exotic superfood. It’s something my ancestors most likely consumed all the time, yet is sadly missing from the modern American diet.

Bone broth.

Specifically, beef bone broth made from grass fed beef marrow bones. You can use chicken bones as well (it’s super easy to use the bones of a rotisserie chicken), but beef is so nutrient dense, packed with healing amino acids and minerals, and the flavor is so hearty, that I prefer using beef.

The health benefits of bone broth have been documented over and over again and all it takes is a Google search to read about them. But here’s a short list: improved gut health, improved detoxification, skin and hair health, immune health, bone and joint health, reduced cellulite, improved food sensitivities, better digestion, improved metabolism, cellular health, antioxidant boost, the list goes on.

Chocolate Hummus

Nothing says Valentine’s Day like chocolate covered strawberries, am I right? Confession – I don’t love strawberries, and the only way I like to eat them is with chocolate. I am not opposed to melting chocolate chips with butter or coconut oil and making a dip that way, but this year I was challenged to come up with a fun recipe for kids on Valentine’s Day – and I am quite pleased with the results… as were my kids who couldn’t keep their little fingers away.

Not Your Average Salad

Salads and I have a pretty shady history. In fact, salads give me a little PTSD. They make me think of diets and all the trauma associated with dieting. The idea that if I only eat “good” food, I’ll look better and be a new and improved version of me. Spoiler alert – I’m always the same me, and no amount of salads or promising diets will change that.

So salads and I needed healing time. We took a break from each other. I focused on food for brain health and began retraining my mind on how I think about food and what motivates me to eat healthy.
